Endocrine system - is composed of glands that secrete different types of hormones
Hormones - control many of your organs, mood, growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction
Parts of the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM:
Pituitary
Thyroid
Pineal
Parathyroid
Thymus
Adrenal
Pancreas
Testes
Ovaries
Pituitary gland - endocrine systems master gland
Pineal - helps our body get ready to sleep and wake up
Adrenal - provide the body with energy in case of emergency
Thyroid - regulates body metabolism, and causes storage of calcium in bones
Parathyroid - controls calcium levels in your body, and normalizes bone growth
Thymus - enables the body to produce certain antibodies
Pancreas - regulates blood sugar levels
Hormones of Pituitary gland:
Growth hormone
Prolactin
Luteinizing Hormone
Estrogen
Testosterone
Pineal gland hormone:
Melatonin
Hormones produced by Thyroid gland:
Thyroxin
Calcitonin
Hormones produced by Parathyroid:
Parathyromone
Thymus - This gland makes white blood cells called T-lymphocytes that fight infection and are crucial as a child's immune system develops. The thymus starts to shrinkafterpuberty.
Hormone produced by Thymus:
Thymosin
Adrenals - Best known for making the "fight or flight" hormone adrenaline (also called epinephrine), these two glands also make hormones called corticosteroids. They affect your metabolism and sexual function, among other things
Hormones produced by Adrenals:
Adrenaline
Costicosteroids
Pancreas - This organ is part of both your digestive and endocrine systems. It makes digestive enzymes that break down food.
Pancreas Hormones - makes the hormones insulin and glucagon. These ensure you have the right amount of sugar in your bloodstream and your cells.
If you don't make insulin, which is the case for people with type 1 diabetes, your blood sugar levels can get dangerously high. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas usually makes some insulin but not enough.
