Nervous System

Subdecks (1)

Cards (34)

  • Nervous System - connects all your body parts and transmits signals from one part to another
  • Nervous System - is a system of cells, tissues, and organs that regulates the body's responses to internal and external stimuli
  • MAJOR DIVISIONS of NERVOUS SYSTEM
    1. Central Nervous System
    2. Peripheral Nervous System
  • Central Nervous System - serves as the main processing center for the entire nervous system.
  • MAIN COMPONENTS OF CNS:
    1. Brain
    2. Spinal Cord
  • Brain - This is an organ located within the skull that functions as an organizer and distributor of information for the body.
  • 3 MAIN PARTS OF THE BRAIN:
    1. Cerebrum
    2. Cerebellum
    3. Brain Stem
  • Cerebellum - the part under the cerebrum that controls posture, balance, and coordination.
  • Cerebrum - large, the upper part of the brain that controls activity and thought.
  • Brain stem - connects to spinal cord; controls vital life processes such as breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, digestion, sleep, etc.
  • Peripheral Nervous System - connects the central nervous system to the organs and limbs.
  • Spinal Cord - This serves as a channel for signals between the brain and the rest of the body and controls simple musculoskeletal reflexes without input from the brain.
  • 2 MAIN DIVISIONS OF PNS
    1. Somatic Nervous System
    2. Autonomic Nervous System
  • Autonomic Nervous System - This system is associated with the involuntary control of body movements.
  • Somatic Nervous System - This system is associated with the voluntary control of body movements
  • 2 PARTS OF SNS:
    1. Cranial Nerves
    2. Spinal Nerves
  • Spinal Nerves - the nerves that carry motor and sensory signals between the spinal cord and the body.
  • Cranial Nerves - the nerve fibers that carry information into and out of the brain stem.
  • Parasympathetic - it maintains body functions and restores the body to normal or relaxed mode.
  • Sympathetic - it is activated when the body is in a dynamic role or stress.
  • 2 SUBDIVISION OF ANS
    1. Sympathetic
    2. Parasympathetic
