American Colonial Period(1910-1942)

• Despite the defeat, the spirit of nationalism was as strong as ever.
• Filipinos started writing again "after the sword was broken" and wrote about love for country and longing for independence.
• Emilio Aguinaldo became the first Philippine president.
• The Philippine flag was raised as a symbol of our independence.
• After 333 years, the Filipinos won against the Spaniards.
• The freedom of the Filipinos was short-lived (they were defeated in the Philippine-American War in 1903)
• Because of free education, many were given a chance to study and English was used as a medium of instruction.
• Free education served as an instrument to improve the social status of the people.
• Two factors that influenced Philippine literature: Education, and Freedom of the printing industry from religious censorship
