Gram staining

• Gram-positive --> organisms have a thick peptidoglycan layer fortified with teichoic acids
• Gram-negative --> organisms have a thin cell wall and outer envelope containing lipoproteins
• Gram-negative bacteria appears pink/red after staining
• Gram-positive bacteria appears purple
