3.1.1 Monomers and Polymers

• Monomers are small repeating molecules from which larger molecules are made
• Polymers are molecules made up of many monomers
• Examples of monomers are nucleotides, monosaccharides and amino acids
• Examples of polymers are polynucleotides, polysaccharides and polypeptides
• Condensation reaction is when 2 molecules join together, forming a chemical bond whilst releasing a molecule of water
• Hydrolysis reactions are 2 molecules separated by breaking a chemical bond, using a molecule water
