  • Average wage for black people in industry was £128 a year (hardly enough to live). The average wage for black farmer was £32 a year.
  • Black employment in manufacturing doubled during WW2.
  • Bus Boycotts in Alexandria township (1940 and 1944), more than 20,000 boycotted, successfully reducing bus fares back down to 4 cents.
  • Mineworkers strike of 1946: 73,000 miners from 21 mines. Strike was crushed.
