Bantustans

• Transkei: 18% who had Transkei registered as their home lived outside the homeland.
• QwaQwa: 78% of the people who were supposed to have lived there were living in white South Africa.
• Verwoerd said it would take until the year 2000 before the homelands could completely self-govern.
• Between 1960 and 1980, the population of the Bantustans increased from 4 million to 11 million.
• By late 1970's, the government was having to subsidise African bus passengers at the rate of $1,000 per commuter per year.
• Between 1960 and 1980:

  • over 1.1 million blacks were removed from white farms
  • 1,600,000 blacks were removed from urban areas.
• Only 13% of the land was designated for the vast majority of the population.
• Average income in Transkei was 170 rand per month, members of the governing council got 12,000 rand.
• By the 1980s, whites earned, on average, six times more than black South Africans.
