Causes and specific symptoms vary by the different types of connective tissue disease
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
More than 10 disorders
Characterized by over-flexible joints, stretchy skin, and abnormal growth of scar tissue
Symptoms range from mild to disabling
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB)
Skin is fragile (tears/blisters as a result of minor bump, stumble or even friction from clothing)
Marfan Syndrome
People tend to be tall, have extremely long bones, thin "spider-like" fingers and toes
Eye problems (Abnormal placement of eye lens and enlargement of the aorta)
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Brittle bones, low muscle mass and lax joints and ligaments
Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis
Inflammation of the muscles and the skin
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Immune system attacks the thin membrane, lining of joints, causing pain, stiffness, warmth and swelling of the joint and inflammation throughout the body
Can lead to permanent joint damage and deformity
Scleroderma
Causes thick, tight skin, buildup of scar tissue and organ damage
Two general categories: Localized scleroderma and systemic sclerosis
Sjögren's Syndrome
Immune system attacks the moisture-producing glands
Symptoms range from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating
May experience extreme fatigue and joint pain
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE/Lupus)
Inflammation of joints, skin and internal organs
Vasculitis
Inflammation of the blood vessels
Affects blood flow to organs and other body tissues
Mixed Connective Tissue Disease
Characterized by several diseases
Symptoms range from mild to life-threatening complications
Infectiousfevers
Pyogenic bacteria
Venereal diseases (VD)
Tuberculosis
Caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (attacks the lungs and damage other parts of the body)
Transmitted through the air (cough, sneezing or talks)
If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal
Those infected with TB bacteria who are not sick can take medications to prevent TB from developing in the future
Tropical diseases
Nutritional common disorders
Poisoning
Medical treatment for poisoning
Elimination: Getrid of the unabsorbedpoison before it can do any harm (through intubation, activated charcoal or whole body irrigation)
Antidotes: Prevent the poison from working or reversing the effects of the poison
