2 - Love

• Agape -

  • Agape is not the kind of love that involves friendship or physical attention
  • It means putting the welfare and interests of others before your own
  • Jesus showed agape to others by dying on the cross to save humanity
  • Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment about love at the Last Supper before he died. This shows love is central to all Christian action and behaviour
• Good Samaritan - Example of Agape

  • Showing love to your neighbour is second most important commandment
  • Jesus explained who our neighbour is in the Parable of the Good Samaritan
  • The Samaritan helped a jew who had been beaten up and left for dead. He took him to an inn and paid for his care
  • Jews and Samaritans were enemies so Jesus teaches love must be shown to anyone in need
• Golden Rule -

  • The Golden Rule is 'Treat others as you want to be treated'
  • It is a summary of Jesus' teaching on love
  • We are to think of others when we act and to treat people with the care and respect we would like from them
