When exposed to pathogens, antigens trigger and immune response which causes the production of antibodies. Antigens also trigger production of memory lymphocytes that will remember how to destroy the pathogen.
Antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system to specifically target and neutralise pathogens and toxins. They recognise and bind to specific pathogens, marking them for destruction for other components of the immune system.
Memory lymphocytes remain in the blood stream and lead to a quicker and stronger defence against a secondary infection when reencountered with a pathogen.
