  • Purpose of peer and self-assessment

    • To note strengths and weaknesses, improve students' understanding of course materials, and improve their metacognitive skills
    • For skill development, improving learning, and helping students improve their performance on assessed work
  • Rubric
    A performance-based assessment tool used to gather data about students' progress on a particular assignment or skill
  • Purpose of rubrics
    • Allow students to understand what is required in an assignment, how it will be graded, and how progress will be monitored for mastery and proficiency
  • Carousel Brainstorm
    Chart papers containing statements or issues for student consideration are posted around the classroom, and groups of students brainstorm at one station and then rotate
  • Concept Maps
    Ask students to create a "map" of ideas connected with a topic, considering how the topics link to each other and using lines or "linking" words to join the concepts together and describe the relationship
  • Four Corners Inquiry
    Students are given an opportunity to formulate their own views and opinions by determining whether they strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree with a statement, and then moving to the appropriate corner of the classroom
  • KWL Charts
    1. what does the student know? W-what does the student need and want to know? L-what did the students learn? This is an effective pre-assessment tool and summative evaluation tool
  • Think-Ink-Pair-Share
    Students commit their thoughts to writing, discuss their ideas in pairs, and then share them with the large group

    During a lesson, students talk about the information presented or shared and clarify thoughts or questions
