    • What is water surplus (security)?
      This exists where water supply is greater than demand.
    • What is water deficit (insecurity)?
      This exists where water demand is greater than supply.
    • What are the global patterns of water surplus and deficit?
      large areas of Africa / Southern Asia suffer water stress (located close to areas of low or no water). In contrast areas to the north of the northern hemisphere have plenty of water e.g. North-East Brazil in the Amazon Rainforest.
    • Give 3 ways in which we use water in our lives?
      Domestic Use – drinking, cooking bathing etc.
      Agricultural use – irrigating crops / water for
      livestock
      Industrial use – use in manufacturing
      Energy use – used in the generation of HEP
      Leisure use – as in sailing / waterskiing, filling
      swimming pools etc.
    • What are the reasons for increasing water consumption?
      Population growth-
      • Increase in the amount of water needed for drinking.
      • As well as an increase in domestic water demand, population growth also increases the use of water for:
      • Energy production
      • Agriculture
      • Industry.
      Economic growth- as countries develop the demand for water increases. More items that use water, industries use large water quantities.
