Food chains

Cards (4)

  • What do food chains show?
    • Feeding relationships
  • What are the levels of a food chain?
    • Producer: Photosynthetic organism that synthesise molecules (plants/algae)
    • Primary consumer: Organism that eats the producer
    • Secondary consumer: Organism that eats the primary consumer
    • Tertiary consumer: Organism that eats the secondary consumer
    • Producers make glucose which is used to make other molecules that make up biomass
  • How can you work out the distribution and abundance of species in an ecosystem?
    • Using transects and quadrats then calculating the mean, median and mode and drawing a graph
    • A stable community will show population cycles between predators and prey.
    • If the population of prey increases, the population of predators will also increase.
    • When there isn't enough prey to feed predators, the number of prey falls and the number of predators increase
