restraint theory

Cards (2)

  • people on a diet restrict their food intake and therefore become restrained eaters, restraint theory would argue that dieters set themselves target to eat smaller amounts of food, they therefore don't ever eat until they feel full making them preoccupied with thoughts about food, this increases their biological drives to eat and makes them more likely to break the rules and have set upon themselves and overeat
  • Boundry model- dieters have a higher biological satiety boundary due to the small amounts of food they eat, before this boundary dieters have a cognitive boundary of when they want to stop eating which they try to spend below. This means that if they eat more and go beyond the boundary the 'what the hell effect' will kick in, and they will eat to their biological satiety boundary
