  Bohol province suffered a 7.2-magnitude earthquake. Its epicenter was located at a depth of 33 kilometers (21 mi), 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) east of Carmen, Bohol, and 629 kilometers (391 mi) from Manila. The quake was felt as far as Davao City. It was the deadliest earthquake in the Philippines in 23 years. The energy of the quake released was equivalent to 32 Hiroshima bombs dropped over Hiroshima during World War II.

  Michael Christian Martinez competed in the figure skating short program event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He placed 19th place overall with a score of 184.25 total points. Martinez was the lone Filipino athlete competing in the Olympics and the first Southeast Asian to compete in the event.
