what were all young people meant to belong to in 1936
one of the nazi youth organisations
who were the edelweiss pirates
city gangs of teenagers
rejected military discipline of the nazis
grew longer hair, boys and girls mixed freely, went on hikes and sang songs mocking the nazis
they also attacked the hitler youth
swing groups
wealthier teenagers
adopted american clothes and music (llike jazz and swing)
they played illegal records and organised dances
what did himmler say about the swing groups
they deserved to be "beaten... then put to hard labour."
why was youth opposition limited
the edelweiss pirates: they only ramped up their vandalism and physical attacks after the war began in 1939, they were treatedharshly and 12 of them were executed in cologne in 1944 to set an example (deterrence)
the swing groups: they were mostly concerned with fashion and culture, although it was rebellious, it didn't represent serious or political opposition
how many hitler youth were there compared to the edelweiss pirates
