Failure to deal with unemployment

• • people demanded political action but Weimar government failed them
  • chancellor proposed higher taxes for unemployment benefit
  • then put fixed time limits on benefits so payments were more affordable
• • no one was happy with this
  • many right-wing & rich opposed higher taxes
  • many left wing & working class opposed reduced benefits
  • policy was rejecting by reichstag
  • failure by moderate parties to work together made reichstag powerless to make policy
• • chancellor resigned in may 1932
