  • apr 1932- jul 1932:
    • april 1932: economic conditions worsened, country desperate for strong government, president hindenburg had to stand for re-election, term of office run out. was national hero but hitler ran against him, claiming he would win easily, hindenburg did not win majority vote in first election. second ballot won 53%, beating hitlers 36.8%
    • may 1932: chancellor bruning was dismissed and replaced with von papen
    • july 1932: the nazis became the most popular party in reichstag, hitler demanded to be chancellor, hindenburg did not trust him and refused his request.
  • nov 1932-jan 1933
    • nov 1932: nazis lost 34 seats in the election, seemed to be losing popularity
    • dec 1932: hindenburg replaced von papen with kurt von schleicher, tried to cause divisions in nazi party by asking another leader in nazi party (george strasser) to be vice-chancellor, hitler stopped strasser accepting- papen resented schleicher because suspected that he persuaded hindenburg to dismiss him, made deal with hitler- if papen persuaded hindenburg to make hitler chancellor, he would make papen vice-chancellor
    • jan 1933: papen persuaded hindenburg to replace schleicher with hitler, thought they could control hitler but he was wrong.
