Nervous system organization

Cards (7)

  • Function of the nervous system: transmit messages in our body
    • by linking sensory receptors that detect stimuli and motor effectors that respond to the stimuli
    • messages are carried out by nerve impulse that act fast
  • Nervous system is divided into the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS)
  • The CNS is subdivided into the brain and spinal cord
  • The peripheral nervous system is divided into the sensory pathway and motor pathway
  • The motor pathway is subdivided into the somatic nervous system (skeletal muscle) and autonomic nervous system (smooth and cardiac muscle, glands)
  • The ANS is subdivided into the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system
  • The nervous system has two types of cells: neurons and neuroglia (supporting cells)
