  • For growth to occur , individual must have experience with significant others who show - genuineness , unconditional acceptance , empathy
    These allow ( but are not causal of ) actualisation
  • Ideal Self - Concept of how you should be
    Real Self - How you perceive yourself
    Discrepancy between ideal and real self makes an incongruency
    If incongruence is high it is hard to adjust to life , psychological problems and self actualisation is not possible
  • PCT focuses on closing the gap between the ideal self and real self
    Self esteem can be affected by
    • Conditions of worth - positive regard only given if certain conditions are met
    • Conditional positive regard - positive regard and praise depends upon appropriate behaviour
    • Unconditional positive regard - accepting and loving person for who they are regardless of other factors , regard not withdrawn if person does something bad
  • Self esteem can be influenced by positive regard
    Consequences of positive regard
    • Self worth - what we think and feel about ourselves
    • Unconditional positive regard - person free to express self and explore surroundings , leads to improved self worth
    • Conditional positive regard - dependency on others , constant seeking of approval and low self worth
