  • what's a CT scan?
    • inject special dye into the person
    • use X-rays
    • to produce cross-sectional images (2D)
    • of major brain structures
    • low resolution
  • dense structures absord more X-rays,
    so look lighter in the image
    e.g. blood
    so bleeding in brain will show up as a light region
  • advantages:
    • cheaper than MRIs
    • low costs
    • faster images
    • more movement - less claustraphobia
  • disadvantages:
    • low resolution only shows major strucutees, not ssmall strucutre e.g. tumours & hypothalammus
    • X-rays can damage DNA in cells
    • only 2D image
    • shows structure not fucntion
    • not real time -> shows image from 1 point in time
