  • Observations/interviews:

  • Surveys/questionnaires:

A series of questions where the number of people who give a certain answer can be shown as a quantity.
  • Quantitative
    Stopwatches
    Surveys
    Ruler/tape measure
    Heart rate monitors
    Observations
  • Qualitative
    Interviews
    Questionnaires
  • What is qualitative data?
Qualitative data deals with opinions, it is subjective, it allows for people to express different viewpoints
It involves opinions to do with quality of performance rather than quantity. A fitness test e.g. could produce a numerical score, for example 8.1 in the bleep test, whereas the person doing the test might say they ‘did poorly’. This expression of opinion is qualitative.
Opinions about how effective extrinsic motivation is.
Opinions about how drugs affect sport.
Opinions about what a diet should contain.
  • What is quantitative data?
Quantitative data deals with numbers. 'Quantities' - there are no options, it is fact/objective. Examples - time, distance measurement, goals scored.
