    The drive to succeed or the desire to want to achieve something
  • Intrinsic motivation
    • The drive that comes from within the performer
    • The performer is driven to achieve something/learn something for the feeling it brings them
    • We may play sports for fun, for the satisfaction and enjoyment of performing well
    • The pride of winning or enjoyment of teamwork
  • Intrinsic motivation
    • Belonging to a relay team
    • The purpose is to do a good time so your team can come as high up as possible
    • The pride of doing well as a team
  • Extrinsic motivation
    • Drive experienced by a performer when striving to achieve a reward from an external source or person
    • These rewards can be split into 2 different groups; tangible and intangible
  • Extrinsic motivation

    • Winning the race and getting a medal
    • Getting praise for doing a good time
    • Someone selecting you for a team after you have run a good time
  • Extrinsic motivation - Positives

    • Good for the first stage of performer at the cognitive stage of learning
    • Provides clear evidence of success, often through tangible rewards
    • Helps the recipient to gain status through the peer group
  • Intrinsic motivation - Positives
    • Good for performers of all experience
    • Success brings a high level of personal satisfaction at all stages of learning
    • Helps the performer to set new goals personal to the individual
    • Leads to long-lasting results
  • A cognitive learner may find it difficult and not that enjoyable so may require more than just intrinsic motivation to keep them persisting in the learning
  • May be demotivating if you don't achieve the 'level' required for the reward i.e. swimming badge
  • May be more 'valuable' with the individual taking part for their own gain/benefit, i.e. satisfaction/to win/pride
  • May encourage lifelong participation/be more long term
  • Motives such as fun and enjoyment may disappear/not be enough to maintain the motivation to participate
  • Rewards may be a very effective way to get children to start to learn a sport
  • Rewards may improve confidence
  • This motivation may undermine/not be as valuable as intrinsic motivators
  • This motivation is more self-sufficient, you don't need anyone else to be present/notice
  • This motivation may not lead to long term participation/may lose effect
  • If rewards are removed, motivation may decline
