Lipid digestion

Cards (5)

  • Lipid digestion
    Where: Duodenum
Secretion source: Pancreas via the pancreatic duct
    Enzyme: Lipase
    Substrate: Triglycerides
    Products: Fatty acids and glycerol
  • Lipid digestion:
Lipids are broken down in the extracellular duodenum by lipase from the pancreas via the pancreatic duct, into fatty acids and glycerol.
  • What does emulsification mean and how does it increase the rate of lipid digestion?
    • Emulsification breaks up large lipid droplets into smaller lipid droplets.
    • This increases the surface area for chemical digestion by lipase
  • Where are the products of lipid digestion absorbed?
In the Ileum, into the lacteal
  • uses of lipids in the body:
    • protection of vital organs
    • electrical and thermal insulation
    • store/source of energy
    • produce phospholipids
    • produce metabolic water
    • excess is stored as fat reserves
