  • No nucleus -> more space for Hb molecules
  • Bioconcave shape -> increases SA
  • millions of Hb -> steeper conc. gradient
  • diameter of RBC is greater than the diameter of a capillary ->reduces diffusion distance and slows RBC so more time for diffusion
