Roots

• Vascular bundle: Found in the centre of a root; central core of xylem tissue, often in the shape of an X, the phloem is located between the arms of the xylem - provides strength to withstand pulling forces roots are exposed to
• Pericycle - Parenchyma tissue found inside the root underneath the endodermis that surrounds the vascular tissue
• Endodermis - Specialised cells surrounding the central vascular tissue in a root with a layer of waterproofing suberin in their cell walls
• Stele - The whole of the vascular tissue + pericycle + endodermis
• Cambium - Layer of meristematic tissue between the xylem and phloem
• Cortex - Layer of parenchyma tissue surrounding the stele in roots
• Epidermis - Outer layer of flattened cells often specialised in roots with root hairs to increase the surface area for uptake of water by osmosis
