• Vascular bundles are found near the edge of the stem; may be separate or like in older woody stems, a complete ring just under the bark; gives strength and flexibility to withstand the bending forces stems and branches are exposed to
• Pith - Central area of parenchyma tissue found in the centre of the stem
• Cortex - In the stem, this contains both parenchyma and collenchyma cells
