  • steps
    • put some alcohol into a spirit burner and measure the mass of bruner using a mass balance
    • measure 100cm3 of distill water into a copper calormiter and insulate it with a draught excluder,cover with an insulating led
    • put burner under calorimeter and light ut
    • stir water using themometer and continue until the heat has reached above 20c
    • reweigh and repeat with different alcohols but make sure the height of the container abover the burner and the volume and water is the same and the moles of the alchohol
  • why might the actual temperature change be less than the theoretical
    • energy is lost to it's surrondings
    • not all of the alcohol is burned
