Origins

• Wihelm Wundt

  • established first ever psychology laboratory in 1875
  • Used introspecting in his work (examination of ones own thought processes)
  • found that these introspective reports could not be replicated and this made them unreliable
  • experience was too subjective (based solely on one persons opinion)
• Emergence of psychology as a science

  • use of scientific and empirical methods to test these hypothesis
  • always will have some element of subjectivity
  • different viewpoints (called approaches)
