  • this is when the arteries supplying the heart become reduced in diameter, or blocked, and the blood cannot flow properly to the heart
  • this condition is caused by high levels of cholesterol in the blood
  • other factors that contribute to CHD include high blood pressure and being overweight or obese, which can put a strain on the arteries and heart
  • you can lower the risk of developing CHD by:
    • eating more fruit, vegetables and fibre
    • selecting lower-fat foods
    • grilling or baking foods instead of frying
    • exercising, losing weight and stopping smoking
    • reducing salt intake
  • CHD is the main cause of death in Wales
  • Rates of heart disease are much higher in Wales than in England and many other European countries
