Photosynthesis

• Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plants and algae
• There are 2 stages in photosynthesis Light Reactions and Carbon Fixation
• Chlorophyll is a green chemical that traps light in the cells of a plant
• Light energy is converted in Chemical Energy by Chlorophyll
• ADP and Pi are joined using chemical energy to form ATP
• During Carbon Fixation water is split into hydrogen and oxygen
• During photosynthesis oxygen diffuses out of the plant cell.
• Hydrogen and ATP are made during the light reaction stage and are used in Carbon Fixation
• Three substances used to produce sugar (glucose) are:

  Hydrogen

  Carbon Dioxide

  ATP
• Photosynthesis ultimately produces glucose which can be transformed into starch or cellulose
• Three limiting factors of photosynthesis are light intensity, temperature and CO2 concentration
