Magnetism

Cards (16)

  • At which part of a magnet is it strongest?
    The poles.
  • What happens when two magnets are brought close together?
They exert a force on eachother.
  • What is a magnetic field?
The region surrounding a magnet where another magnet or magnetic material experiences a non-contact force.
  • What is a permanent magnet?
    Produces its own magnetic field.
  • What is an induced magnet?
Only magnetic when in a magnetic field.
  • Induced magnetism always causes what type of force?

    A force of attraction.
  • Give four magnet materials.
    Iron, steel, cobalt, nickel
  • In what direction does a magnetic field point?
In the direction of the force that a North Pole would experience if places in the field, from the north seeking pole to the south seeking pole of a magnet.
  • What does a magnetic compass contain?
A small bar magnet that points in the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field.
  • What is produced when current flows through a conducting wire?
    A magnetic field around it.
  • What determines the strength of the magnetic field around a current-carrying wire?
The magnitude of the current flowing through the wire.
  • What does a high concentration of field lines indicate?
    A strong magnetic field.
  • How is a plotting compass used to map out a magnetic field?
By aligning the compass needle with the magnetic field lines and marking the direction of the needle at different points, a map of the magnetic field can be created.
  • What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire which, when current passes through it, creates a strong magnetic field.
  • Describe the magnetic field inside a solenoid.
    Strong and uniform.
  • What is the field outside a solenoid like?
Weak, the fields from each coil cancel out.
