• Upthrust


  When an object is submerged in fluid, pressure from fluid exerts a force on it from every direction
• Pressure increases with depth, so force on the bottom of the object will be larger than the force at the top
• If the weight is larger than the upthrust

  Object will sink
• If the weight is smaller than the upthrust

  Object will float
• If density of object is larger than density of the liquid

  Object will sink (cannot displace enough water to equal its weight)
• If density of object is smaller than density of the liquid


  Object will float (displaces enough water that is equal to its weight before it's fully submerged)
