• Electromagnetic waves transfer energy from source to an absorber

  all waves in Electromagnetic spectrum are transverse
• The waves are shown in order from longest to shortest wavelength

  The waves also increase in frequency and energy along the spectrum

• The only part of electromagnetic spectrum humans can see is visible light
• Electromagnetic waves can be absorbed, transmitted,reflected or refracted but it depends on there wavelength
• Electromagnetic spectrum is continuous
• In vaccum all electromagnet spectrums travel at 300,000,000 m/s

  Electromagnetic waves will travel at slower velocities in denser materials
• When electromagnetic waves enter new material they can be refracted and change direction
• Radio waves can be produced by or can themselves induce oscillations in electrical circuits
• How do microwaves work

  • Water molecules in food absorb microwaves making them vibrate and heat up
• Infrared,visible light and x-rays are generated by change in the arrangement of electrons in atoms

  -can take more energy to generate x-rays
• Gamma rays come from changes in nuclei of atom
• Electromagnetic radiation can also cause changes in atoms when absorbed

  • E.g. high frequency electromagnetic radiation such as ultraviolet, x-rays and Gamma rays cause ionization(atoms lose electrons and become ions)
