random sample

  • Random sampling is where the researcher selects the target population, and then selects the people randomly such as putting the participants names in a hat and selecting them at random creating their sample population.
    How to obtain/ collect:
They get a list of all participants and select at random using the lottery method
  • random sampling Strengths:
It is not biassed so the extraneous and confounding variables are equally split  between the groups therefore the results are more valid.
    Limitations:
It is time consuming to obtain a list of the target population, and the sample can be still unrepresentative of the population even though it is more likely to be representative than opportunity sampling. Also the participants may refuse to take part in the conduct of the experiment.
