  • Sports
    An activity that requires physical actions and skills where individuals or teams compete under a set of rules
  • Individual sports
    • Also known as solo sports
    • One competes by oneself
    • Participants do not have teammates to rely on to achieve the main objective
    • Allow athletes to go at their own pace since they are not affected by other athletes' progression
  • Dual sports
    • Involve two athletes on the same team competing with two athletes of the opposite team, known as two on two
  • Stress
    A reaction of the body and mind to upsetting or challenging life incidents such as tense feelings, worry and discomfort
  • Stressors
    • Major life changes that threaten one's sense of security and self-esteem (family and social life)
    • Everyday problems of daily hassles or occasional petty incidents
    • Physical surroundings that affect the level of day-to-day stress

  • Individual sports
    • Athlete can progress at own pace to improve skills
    • Skills are more mental than physical - autonomy, self-discipline, focused thinking, passion
    • Allows aiming for personal goals without worrying about hurting the team
  • External motivation
    Comes from someone else or involves gaining a reward, e.g. coach yelling, winning a medal, parent telling to do something
  • Intrinsic motivation
    Desire comes from within, a trait many individual sport athletes possess, e.g. running a personal best, attempting to qualify for a tournament
