  • The Act of Succession in April 1534 voided Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and illegitimated their daughter Mary
  • Divorce was a reason for reformation as Catherine hadn't provided an heir and the Pope refused to allow an annulment, the early case was based on a biblical argument from Leviticus
  • Doctrine was a reason for reformation as Henry wanted a different policy than the Church and the Pope in Rome
  • Henry exploited the weakness of the catholic church through supporting humanist Erasmus
  • In 1532 the act in conditional restraint of annates was passed which withheld first year income.
  • In 1534 was the act of supremacy, henry wanted to gain more power and this declared him as supreme head of the Church in England.

  • The dissolution of the monasteries meant Henry VIII was able to sell monastic land to nobles, charges of vandalism put on Henry.
  • Overall, the aim of dosh failed as Henry sold and gave away this land incredibly fast
  • Doctrine of the Church was not effectively change, a lot of change occurred however not positively, it began a tumultuous rivalry between catholic and protestant.
  • 1539 six articles reasserted catholic doctrine following excommunication from the pope in 1538.
  • 1536 ten articles= decreased the sacraments to baptism, penance and eucharist. Confession praised.
  • As a result changes to doctrine were ineffective - KING PROCLAIMED TO BE A CATHOLIC AND HAD A CATHOLIC FUNERAL. Despite pushing Protestantism through marriages to people such as Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves!
