Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon was annulled in May 1533
Henry VIII secretly married Anne Boleyn in 1533
The Act of Succession in April1534 voided Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon and illegitimated their daughter Mary
Divorce was a reason for reformation as Catherine hadn't provided an heir and the Pope refused to allow an annulment, the early case was based on a biblical argument from Leviticus
Doctrine was a reason for reformation as Henry wanted a different policy than the Church and the Pope in Rome
Henry exploited the weakness of the catholic church through supporting humanist Erasmus
In 1532 the act in conditional restraint of annates was passed which withheld first year income.
In 1534 was the act of supremacy, henry wanted to gain more power and this declared him as supreme head of the Church in England.
Dosh was a reason for reformation as Henry VIII wanted to capitalise on the extreme wealth of the monasteries.
Henry VIII also wanted to dissolve the monasteries to rid of some of his opponents as they owed allegiance to Rome.
February 1536 = Lesser monasteries dissolved
1538 = Greater monasteries dissolved
1539 = all monasteries dissolved
The dissolution of the monasteries meant Henry VIII was able to sell monastic land to nobles, charges of vandalism put on Henry.
Overall, the aim of dosh failed as Henry sold and gave away this land incredibly fast
Doctrine of the Church was not effectively change, a lot of change occurred however not positively, it began a tumultuous rivalry between catholic and protestant.
1539six articles reasserted catholic doctrine following excommunication from the pope in 1538.
1536ten articles= decreased the sacraments to baptism, penance and eucharist.Confession praised.
As a result changes to doctrine were ineffective - KING PROCLAIMED TO BE A CATHOLIC AND HAD A CATHOLIC FUNERAL. Despite pushing Protestantism through marriages to people such as Anne Boleyn and Anne of Cleves!
The structure of the church was already in need of change due to pluralism = more than one post. And the presence of anticlericalism.
STRUCTURE WAS HEAVILY ALTERED, KING BECAME SUPREME HEAD OF THE CHURCH = Act of supremacy1534
HOW DID THE KING BECOME SUPREME HEAD OF THE CHURCH?
Act of supremacy 1534
(structure) ALTERED ORDER OF RANKS, CROMWELL IN 1534 OUTRAKNED BISHOPS = VICEGENERENT
(structure)POSITIVE CHANGE = SIX NEW DIOCESES AS IT IMPROVED CHURCH ADMIN
Changes to liturgy (what they did) 1536 and 1538 Royal injunctions changed pilgrimages; first days allowed for them were reduced then condemned fully.
