Cell Organisation

Cards (4)

  • large multicellular organisms are made up of organ systems
    • cells make up living organisms, some cells are specialised.
    • the process of them being specialised is called differentiation (occurs during the development of a multicellular organism)
    • these specialised cells form tissues, which form organs, which form organ systems
    • large multicellular structures have different systems inside them for exchanging/ transporting materials
  • similar cells are organised into tissues
    • a tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. types of tissue:
    • muscular - contacts to move whatever it's attached to
    • glandular - makes/secretes chemicals like enzymes/ hormones
    • epithelial - covers parts of the body e.g. inside the gut
  • tissues are turned into organisms
    • an organ is a type of different tissue that works together to perform a certain function
    • muscular - moves stomach wall to churn up the food
    • glandular - makes digestive juices to digest food
    • epithelial - covers the outside and inside of the stomach
  • organs are organised into systems
    • organ system is a group of organs working together
    • for example the digestive system
    • glands - produce digestive juices
    • stomach/ small intestine - digest food
    • liver - produces bile
    • small intestine - absorbs soluble food molecules.
    • large intestine - aborbs water from undigested food, leaving poo
