  • If someone is failing to function adequately, they cannot do their everyday activities. For example, keeping up with hygiene, going to the shops, going to work.

    • Unpredictability
    • Irrationality
    • Maladaptiveness
    • Personal suffering or distress

    • Matches sufferers perceptions - allows the sufferers to seek help and know that they canโ€™t function adequately.
    • Assess degree of abnormality - Global assessment of Functioning Scale (GAFS) can easily assess how well a person copes with every day life.
    • Observable behaviour - you can clearly see what behaviours are abnormal such as depression.
    • Patients perspective - acknowledges the experience of the patient.

    • Exceptions to the rule - may just sometimes experience failure to function adequately, but can still function sometimes.
    • Not the whole picture - we donโ€™t see all the issues so its hard to determine whether the person is unable to function adequately.
    • Cultural issues - racial prejudice and cultural differences make it hard for some people to function adequately.
