Coding, capacity and duration of memory

Cards (9)

  • echoic memory – sound that is coded acoustically
  • Memory recognition is when a person is able to retrieve a memory once they’re shown the memory again because it feels familiar to them. It is a type of memory retrieval
  • Memory recall is when we consciously re-access a memory without having to be reminded of the memory first. It is a type of memory recall
  • Retrieval is the third stage in the memory process and is when we take information out of memory storage so it can be remembered
  • Storage is the second stage of the memory process and is the process of keeping information in our memory
  • Encoding is the first stage of the memory process and it relates to the form information takes when it is stored in your brain.
  • The STM mainly encodes information acoustically (a sensory code) but can also encode information semantically.
  • Its impossible to test capacity in the LTM
  • visual encoding is where information is stored based on how it looks.
