  • Thomas Paine attacked Britain as monarchical, aristocratic and corrupt, advised the American colonists to have full independence with Britain, argued for citizen's natural rights to life, liberty and property, said that legitimate governments must be based on consent and on the sovereignty of the people, and the people's rights should be in a written constitution
