    • Napoleon's rule introduced to Germany some of the same ideas and political changes that had been part of the French Revolution.
    • One of these ideas was liberalism - the belief that an elected parliament should pass laws and run the country, rather than power being held by an absolute monarch (ie, a king or queen).
    • Many Liberals were middle-class and wanted freedom of speech and an end to censorship. This made them receptive to nationalist ideas.
