• habitus - ways of thinking that are shared by a particular social class
• m/c has power to define habitus and impose it over ed system - gives m/c advantage
• schools have a m/c habitus so m/c pupils valued as they have been socialised into m/c taste at home

  • w/c devalued and deemed tasteless
• by defining w/c taste and lifestyle as inferior, symbolic violence reproduces the class structure and keeps the lower classes 'in their place'
