Investigating enzyme

Cards (6)

  • Amylase
Enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of starch into smaller sugar molecules
  • Iodine test

Identifies the presence of starch but does not react with simple sugars
  • Investigating the effect of pH on enzyme activity
    1. Measure 2cm3 amylase solution into test tube
    2. Add 1cm3 pH solution
    3. Record pH
    4. Add 2cm3 starch solution
    5. Start stop clock
    6. Take sample after 20 seconds and test with iodine
    7. Repeat testing every 10 seconds until iodine no longer turns black
  • Repeat the experiment using different pH solutions to obtain a range of data
  • Repeat experiments if time allows to obtain more accurate mean values at each pH
  • Analyze the data using knowledge of enzymes to explain the results
