  • Compliance
    Public but not private
    Required – the behaviour or opinion stops when they are not with the group
    Temporary change in views and so weak
     To gain approval/avoid disapproval or rejection
  • Identification
    Public, and sometimes private
    Views are maintained whilst a part of the group but are not maintained when they leave the group
     Permanent whilst in the group but only whilst you’re in the group
     Because you want to be a part of the group
  • Internalisation
    Public and private acceptance
    Not required – the behaviour or opinions are maintained when the group is not present.
    Permanent change in views so strong
    Genuinely accept the group norms
  • Normative social influence
    To gain approval, be like or accepted, avoid rejection. Therefore, they don’t necessarily truly believe.
    With strangers, friends, anywhere where you fear rejection
     Compliance
  • Informational social influence
    Believe others are right/don’t want to be wrong
    When the task is ambiguous
    Internalisation
