Carrying Out a Titration

Cards (7)

  • Acids and alkalis react together to forma a neutral solution (e.g. water)
  • Titration - an accurate technique used to find out how much of an acid is needed to neutralise an alkali
    • When neutralisation takes place :
    • The hydrogen ions (H⁺) from the acid join together with the hydroxide ions (OH⁻) from the alkali
    • This forms water (H₂O) , with a neutral pH
    • H⁺ (aq) + OH⁻ (aq) → H₂O (l)
  • You must use a suitable indicator in titrations
  • If you have a strong acid and alkali , you can use methyll orange or phenolphthalein
  • Strong acids
    • Hydrochloric acid
    • Nitric acid
    • Sulfuric acid
  • Strong alkalis
    • Aqueous potassium hydroxide
    • Aqueous sodium hydroxide
