Scene 1 - Lee

Cards (5)

  • "You think I don't understand that stuff, don't you?"

Lee interrupts Austin, as to take up more space on stage. Lee very questioning - initiator of conversations, Austin only responds (very one sided). Lee has the power. O'Hare seated at lower level to Ferns give Ferns physical dominance, which is further shown through Ferns' gait: standing with straight back and feet hip width apart create a territorial masculine atmosphere
  • "What d'ya want, an award? Some kinda medal?"
Lee speaks loudly when mocking Austin to make the "joke" seem more menacing, but hints of bitterness and shame at not going to see him himself are communicated. Reference to award shows competition between the brothers, over moral high ground + favour from their father?
  • "Those are the most monotonous f*ckin' crickets I ever heard in my life"

Lee seems guilty after rowing with A about not taking money. He stands awkwardly looking over at Lee - intense eye contact, then breaks away. Scene is very still - tension for audience. Lee has regretful and sombre facial expression, looks a little ashamed of himself. Hunched, small body posture - he's no longer proud and confrontational
  • "Oh, that's right, you got the wife and kiddies now don't you? The house, the car, the whole slam"

Lee has a provocative tone, but audience wonders if L feels jealousy towards A. Brothers are standing at the same level. Feels more personal/intimate. Is Ferns beginning to consider the possibility of becoming a family man? Beginning to build a closer relationship, they have a discussion and actually listen to each other -building middle ground. Masculinity/violence - ashamed after their violent argument?
  • "Don't you say that to me! Don't you ever say that to me! ... I can git me own money my own way. Big money!"

Lee has a bitter tone when yelling at Austin. Lee feels as if his lifestyle is being attacked and he does not accept that. He storms towards Austin and spits out his words right at his face.
