  • "I'm livin' out there 'cause I can't make it here!"

Lee finally confesses the truth about his past. Shows his desperation his longing to have what Austin has, despite Austin seeming so unhappy with his own life. Lee admits he has been forced out of society because he can't function in it, isn't accepted by those like Austin
  • "It's a deal."

The brothers agree to compromise - Austin will write Lee's script if Lee takes him out to the desert when he's done. The brothers are both standing, making eye contact, they are on equal levels. They have finally reached a kind of peace. Suggests Shepard's belief that happiness is unattainable until we accept our true selves, duality and all.
  • "I wanna talk to a woman. I haven't heard a woman's voice in a long time"

"savage male identity". Obsession with a woman to be able to confide in, showing vulnerability is only acceptable with a woman.
  • "What're you gonna' do with all them toasters?"
  • "That's the dumbest thing I ever saw in my life."
  • "What is this bullshit with the toast anyway! You make it sound like some salvation or something."
  • "I don't want any goddamn toast! How many times I gotta' tell ya'!"
