Charlotte Lucas characterisation

Cards (5)

  • Charlotte Lucas acts as a foil to Elizabeth's character, she is in direct contrast to the protagonist. While Elizabeth believes marriage should be based on romantic love (Austen's viewpoint), Charlotte is more pragmatic, and she marries a man for the social and financial benefits
  • Her views on marriage are practical, rather than romantic. She sees marriage as a social and financial necessity, rather than a romantic and emotional bond
  • Charlotte's pragmatic approach to marriage can also be seen as a survival strategy within a patriarchal structures. By securing a husband, she gains a degree of financial independence and social standing that would otherwise be inaccessible to her as an unmarried women.
  • She represents the realistic life of a woman in the Georgian era by embodying the pragmatic choices, limited opportunities and social pressures that shaped the lives of women during this period
  • She doesn't have a romanised view of marriage much like Elizabeth
