Cells

    Cards (11)

    • Cells

The basic unit of all living organisms
    • Organisms

      • Can be Prokaryotes or Eukaryotes
    • Parts of a cell

      • Cell membrane
      • Cytoplasm
      • Nucleus
      • Mitochondria
      • Ribosomes
    • Genetic material

DNA that carries the instructions for the cell
    • Cytoplasm

Gel-like substance between the cell membrane and the nucleus where most of the chemical reactions happen
    • Nucleus

Contains DNA and controls the activities of the cell
    • Mitochondria

Where most of the aerobic reactions for respiration take place, providing the cell with energy
    • Ribosomes

Where proteins are made in the cell
    • Plant cells

      • Have a cell wall made of cellulose, a large permaent vacuole, and chloroplasts for photosynthesis
    • Bacterial cells

      • Are much smaller, have no nucleus, and have a cell wall and plasmids
    • Bacterial cells do not have a true nucleus, instead they have a single circular strand of DNA that floats freely in the cytoplasm
